Place by Place

Designed, written, and produced by Taylor Naoko and CJ Tuff, a Vancouver-based couple, Place by Place is a photo book consisting of 82 images spread over 106 pages, featuring seven kissaten—traditional Japanese coffee shops—taken during the time period they lived in Tokyo.

Kissaten were originally introduced as a counterpart to the French-style cafes that had become a common place to celebrate and drink alcohol. During the Shōwa era (1926 to 1989), there were over 150,000 kissaten nationwide. However that number has dwindled as time has gone by, and now they are more of a rarity than anything else.

The idea for Place by Place came after months of exploring the kissaten and cafes of Japan—not initially planned for a photo project, but out of a desire to explore a type of coffee culture that was unfamiliar and unique. After some time in Japan, this project began as a way to bridge photography, design, and writing, with their shared lifestyle surrounding coffee.

Printed as part of the Booooooom 2024 Art & Photo Book Award, Place by Place represents a commemoration of kissaten culture, highlighting the architecture, people, and spaces that define these iconic Japanese cafés in a limited-run print.
